When one door closes…

P1010413

…another one opens of course! But sometimes we still are sad to see that door close and that is the case for many of us who are fans of my friend Kathy’s Home on the Hill in New Brunswick, CA. You see today, Kathy and Stephen close the door on the cottage they built 10 years ago as their retirement home. A lot of love, time and hard labor went into building that cottage. Stephen and Kathy did a lot of work themselves. Even as recently as last summer Stephen added a gorgeous stone patio, fence and arbor to the property. They make an awesome team with Stephen building and Kathy decorating and pulling it all together. But when they built what they thought would be their forever home, they were not grandparents yet. So living out in the country seemed right. And it was right ~ for a season or ten. But now with 4 young granddaughters and a grandson coming literally any day, living in the country is not where their hearts are anymore. They want to be closer to their family and church among other things. So today, that is exactly what is happening. They are packing up the very last of their belongings from the country and moving to their brand new town home in the city.

Kathy and Stephen so graciously allowed me to share with you some of the different seasons at their now former Home on the Hill ~ both inside and out. For all the Webshots gals who, like me, spent many happy times looking at Kathy's Home on the Hill albums, this our chance to say goodbye to the home we all fell in love with.

Kathy, So while we are sad to say goodbye to your cottage, I know many of your friends, family will be thinking of you and Stephen as you close the door on one season and open a brand new one in your gorgeous brand new town home on James Street! P1050714_2

I know it is a bittersweet time leaving the Home on the Hill that you put so much into, but I also know for you both the sweet outweighs the bitter because where your family is, that is where you are most at home. A new season in a new home with a new decorating style, closer to family and church – it’s an exciting new beginning for you.

And even though it was our shared loved of antiques and primitives that brought us together on Webshots, and even though for a time I will miss all the primitives that aren’t making the trip with you ~ it is because we both always agree that ~ the best things in life are not really THINGS at all ~ that our friendship endures.

Best wishes and many blessings in this new season dear friend.

Speaking of doors, a big new door opened for our niece Jamie as she married her college sweetheart Will at the gorgeous Simsbury Inn in CT this weekend.

Jamie was a stunny bride!!

009

The flower girls were too cute!!010Her dress was stunning!

015

016 Jamie and Will were charming as they danced their first dance…

070

… and we all loved the pretty turquoise shoes Jamie wore ~ what a fun twist!

101

104

The food was delicious and Mr. Red Door and I enjoyed a wonderful evening with his side of the family…

059

…his parents, who have been visiting from SC all week and…

083

…his sister ~ the Mother of the Bride…

064

and all 3 of our grown kids. (Lili stayed with her other Grammy and Grampy.)

3 kids

Because our family is so small it is not often that we get to celebrate such a special event so we decided to make a family weekend of it. Mr. Red Door reserved rooms for all of us to stay over night at the Inn so we could celebrate late into the night.

Mr. Red Door and I had the room on the top floor just to left of the left chimney!

It looked like this inside!

I highly recommend a wedding ceremony and reception at an Inn where the guest can simply take the elevator to their rooms at the end of the evening. It really made for a wonderful weekend! And we wish Will and Jamie many many years of love and laughter together

This special week closed with a family dinner here last night. Great Grandma R had to get in some more Lili time. They got along famously of course!

005 We hope we made many memories to hold us through until the next time we can all be together here Behind My Red Door.

Here Behind My red Door, many actual doors will be closing as well.

Yes it is time. It really has to be done.

The bathroom and bedroom and office doors will be closed all the time now.

But all for a very good reason I promise….

Yes ~ this little beanut is crawling around!!

So now it’s time to baby proof Grammy’s house!!

A trip to Toys R Us is in order. I see gates and latches in my future!

I’m still here...

Good evening friends and followers! I hope April is being good to each and everyone of you. I have been working hard on A Primitive Place magazine and caring for family but I I feel bad that I haven’t given my followers anything to read lately so I am squeezing in this post before I crash for the night.

This past weekend Bonnie, her daughter Ashley and I photographed two amazing homes for a future issue. The homeowners were so gracious and the homes – pure eye candy! I can’t wait until they make it to print!! You will NOT be disappointed!! If you are one of the few people who haven’t subscribed yet, you can click HERE to find out all about it.

Last week Jill came down from Maine for truly our last day together here in New England. She is right now on her way to her new home in SC. I can’t wait to share pictures with you after I see it in person come May! More about that in a later post. While she was here, we of course went shopping and this time I took her to Country Plus in Hopkinton, MA. Click on the name to see pictures of this wonderful store – full of prims and amazing antiques. I always find at least one treasure there. This time I found an antique hog scraper.

016 Right now it is at home on my little cubbies in the kitchen.

012

From there we went to Red House Primitives, 400 Washington Street, Rt.16, Holliston, MA 01746. Holliston, MA. This was my first time there and it won’t be my last. Wonderful antiques and prims here as well!

002

003

And the neighbors aren’t too shabby either…001

007

I found a great crock to add to my kitchen counter. Now I just need some more spoons, mashers and rolling pins to fill them – something to look for on future outings.028

019

I also took home this little guy. He keeps moving around.

033

It was a great day and a wonderful send off to my dear friend. For those of you who don’t know Jill, she is known as Primchick in the APP Gallery. Click HERE to see her former home in Maine and then imagine twice the space filled with twice the treasures. That’s what her SC home will be like!

Speaking of the APP Gallery, I am so excited that my sweet friend Karen of Catskill Mountain prims is the newest member. She has amazing collections – and she has some wonderful projects planned too. You have to click HERE to see her gorgeous prim home.

Our niece is getting married this weekend so Mr. Red Door’s folks are in town from SC. It is getting harder for them to make the drive home and my FIL cannot fly so MIL wants as much Lili time as possible. I totally understand so I will entertaining them here every day this week as I watch Lili too. She is blessed to have 5 great grandparents in her life. And she is getting so smart! Every day she does something else that amazes me. This week you can ask her where her hair is and she will tell you by grabbing it! LOL And that hair is getting longer with some wispy curls. And those thick black eyelashes – they could put Maybelline out of business! She is her Mommy’s Little Princess, and she is the light of all of our lives.

When I looked at blogger today I was reminded that next week marks my 2nd blogoversary. I was in the midst of planning our son’s (Lili’s dad’s) destination wedding ceremony and helping with the formal reception at home one week later but for some reason I still decided that I would try my hand at blogging. A few months earlier my friend Kathy had introduced me to a wonderful blog called My Yellow Farmhouse. As a people watcher and house peeper, I was mesmerized and captivated. I loved reading about Karen’s decorating and luncheons with friends and family trips and crafts and recipes. From her blog I found others and the world of blogging opened up to me. I had already been sharing our home and my crafts on Webshots with a great community of gals so I decided maybe blogging would be fun too. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would open so many worlds to me nor did I imagine I would meet so many amazing people. And certainly never did I imagine that people from around the world would find something interesting enough to come back again and again. A big welcome to my newest followers for stopping by and taking the time to sign up.

In these 2 years I have shared so much with you all. Starting with the wedding and reception. And the call and later being published both Country Sampler and Mercantile Gathering. There were foliage trips, shopping trips, gatherings and outings. We cooked together and you stopped by while I tweaked, painted, stenciled and rearranged. You prayed for my dad when he was in the hospital and you prayed for me after the death of our beloved grand doggy Brady. You celebrated with me on birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and the birth of our first grandchild. I am still honored and humbled by it all and I thank each and every one of you for your part in this journey.

I will leave you with this Meme – it just might help you to get to know me a little better.

If I were a gemstone, I would be - a sparkling diamond.

If I were a scent, I would be - just like Lili after her bath.

If I were a pair of shoes, I would be - a pair of Clark’s clogs in red.

If I were the weather, I would be - sunny, 65, slight breeze with fluffy white clouds.

If I were a facial expression, I would be - puckered lips!

If I were a car, I would be – a brand new Murano with sun roof, CD player and Lili’s car seat in the back – and just maybe heated leather seats this time…

If I were a time of day, I would be- a golden autumn evening sunset – red sky at night, sailor’s delight.

If were a month, I would be - a cool crisp October of course!

008

If I were a place, I would be - right here at home Behind My Red door!

If I were a liquid, I would be - cool spring water.

If I were a taste, I would be - a buffet of flavors from savory to spicy to sweet.

If I were an animal, I would be - a Bull Mastiff puppy.Brady Jan 05

If I were a food, I would be - chocolate.

If I were a color, I would be - red of course!

If I were a musical instrument, I would be- a piano – Mr. Red Door knows how to play those keys after all.

If I were a flower, I would be - a daisy.

If I were a song, I would be - Color My World

If I were a planet, I would be - Mother Earth

If I were an object, I would be - a soft cuddly well loved blanket so I could wrap around my family.

If I were a fruit, I would be - sweet black cherries.

If I were a day of the week, I would be -Friday.

If I were a pattern, I would be - an antique coverlet.

If I were a sound, I would be- my loved ones voices.

What would you be??
